B Walk 06-Oct-2024
Leader: Sheila Grice
Distance (miles): 8.00
Ascent (feet): 1034
Difficulty: Moderate
Eyam/Litton
Description:
We start the B walk in the historic village of Eyam, famously known for the part its inhabitants played in helping to stop the spread of the bubonic plague in the 17th century.
The area has a long history of lead mining, but these days the village’s income is from the tourist trade.
From Eyam we walk downhill towards Stoney Middleton, negotiating a final short steep descent into the village. From here we take a short sharp climb out of Stoney Middleton, before following a reasonably level and scenic footpath to join Coombs Dale.
Coombs Dale is a beautiful deep wooded valley, flanked by grassy slopes. It is a designated SSSI because of its important wildlife habitats, and rare wildflowers and butterflies. Coombs Dale also has a chequered history, being once the hunting ground of Black Harry, a notorious highwayman, whose ghost is said to haunt the valley.
We will follow the path, which rises gradually up Coombs Dale, to a reservoir at the top of the valley. Here we can have our lunch stop. We’ll make it a brief lunch stop as we will be stopping for refreshments at the Black Lion in Foolow.
The afternoon's walking will be across pasture following good paths and tracks with lovely scenery. There’ll be quite a few stiles to negotiate, so bring your climbing legs. We finish the walk back in Eyam, hopefully with enough time for tea/coffee.
