COACH DROP OFF: When going to recce a walk please ensure the drop off and pick up points for the coach are carefully considered.
TIMINGS; Think about timings whilst carrying out a recce. The walk will always take longer with a larger group of people, especially if there are stiles.
TOILET FACILITIES: Ideally there should be toilet facilities at the startand end of the walk.
COUNT: Make sure you count the participants on the walk and do so throughout the day, especially after a stop. Participants should be made aware that if they leave the group, for any reason, they should let the leader and/or back marker know.
KEEP AN EYE ON YOUR FLOCK! : It is good practise to ensure you keep an eye on the people behind you on a regular basis so you are aware if there are any problems. You can always adjust the pace if people are not keeping up.
WHISTLE: Always carry a whistle.
BACK MARKER: appoint a Back Marker.
INSTRUCTIONS: make sure everyone on the walk knows how long they have for a lunch stop and where the meet up point is. This also applies to the pick up point for the coach at the end of the walk.
DRIVER’S INFORMATION SHEET: complete fully with post codes etc.
WRITE UP: complete the template for the Walks Notice and submit. The description doesn’t need to be very detailed. Distance, ascent, toilet stops, lunch stop and finish point are the most important points. Advice on equipment can also be given or anything participants need to be made aware of.
BACK UP: Consider a contingency plan if you could not make the walk, at the last minute. If possible submit a map and/or GPX file, before the walk day, just in case. This only happens on rare occasions but it is worth considering.
FIRST AID KIT: Walk Leaders should carry a First Aid Kit to include dressings and bandages.
