Great Ayton
Description:
From the pretty town of Great Ayton, we cross fields and woodland gradually gaining height and offering views across the Cleveland countryside.
Before we reach Kildale, the route takes us a short way along a steep road where we pick up the Cleveland way. There is more woodland walking, and we gain more height eventually reaching the Captain Cooke monument.
Captain James Cooke, one of the greatest seafarers of his age, went to school in Great Ayton and must have spent many hours walking these hills.
From the monument, we continue along the Cleveland way heading for Roseberry Toping, known by some as the Yorkshire Matterhorn. It’s distinctive shape a result of weathering and quarrying. We can either skirt around it’s summit or take the more direct route over the top before dropping down to our pub stop, the Kings Head at Newton under Roseberry.
By comparison, the afternoon is but a gentle stroll back to Great Ayton.
