From the coach, we begin with a gentle descent along the Chalkland Way to the picturesque village of Thixendale. The village dates back to the time of the Domesday Book, while its historic pub has served the community since 1793. As this guide goes to press, the pub is preparing to reopen following an extended closure. Nestled deep within the rolling chalk valleys of the Yorkshire Wolds, Thixendale is one of the region’s most attractive villages. Situated at the meeting point of six major dales, it is a popular hub for walkers and cyclists exploring both the Yorkshire Wolds Way and the Chalkland Way. Our route descends into Thixendale Wold, where the scenery is both varied and spectacular. The sweeping landscapes and distinctive chalk valleys were a favourite subject of the artist David Hockney, whose work captured the beauty of this remarkable countryside. We then climb out of Thixendale through Brubberdale and continue to Fridaythorpe, where we stop for lunch. At around 550 feet above sea level, Fridaythorpe is the highest village in the Yorkshire Wolds. The village features a charming duck pond, a traditional pub, and a café. After lunch, we continue along the Yorkshire Wolds Way before descending to Huggate, where we meet the coach for our journey home.
