Difficulty: Moderate
Fox House and Padley Gorge
Description:
A moderate circular walk starting at Longshaw and then following Burbage Brook upstream to Upper Burbage car park before walking along Stanage Edge. With good visibility there should be views over the Hope Valley. Heading downhill past the wildflower meadows at North Lees Hall. Charlotte Bronte visited the Hall several times while staying with her friend at the Vicarage in nearby Hathersage. It became the principal inspiration for Thornfield Hall in the novel ‘Jane Eyre’, described as: “three storeys high; a gentleman’s manor house; battlements round the top gave it a picturesque look”.
Lunch will be taken in the churchyard of St Michael and All Angels in Hathersage near the grave of Little John. The ‘Scotsmans Pack Country Inn’ is available nearby for those requiring liquid refreshments.
After lunch our walk follows the river Derwent to Leadmill Bridge before going uphill to Hathersage Booths. Then downhill to Padley Gorge before following Burbage Brook back to Longshaw.
