Bradgate Park near Leicester
Description:
This has to be one of our most eye pleasing walks, with at many points, some beautiful views over the East Midlands.
Our walk starts in the historic Bradgate Park, (free toilets available) whose 850 acres houses Bradgate House, the ruins of the home of Lady Jane Grey and the Grey family.
We start with an ascent from the car park and make our way to Old John Tower where we taste the first of some great views. Onward across the fairways of Lingdale Golf Club until we start approaching Woodhouse Eaves and a coffee stop with pasture views. We continue climbing until we reach Beacon Hill with even better views from the summit. Forest trails then take us into Woodhouse Eaves where we will have a lunch stop in the Church Yard and some refreshment at The Wheatsheaf Inn. After lunch, we take a downward, beautiful woodland walk through Swithland Wood until we approach Cropston Reservoir and re-enter Bradgate Park, it’s here that we will get up close to the parks famous red and fallow deer, who seem to be unusually comfortable around humans and don’t mind posing for photos. We will pass the Deer Barns Cafe, where if time permits, we may be able to sample the local ice cream, until we return to the car park and toilets for our homeward journey.
