BAKEWELL—MONSAL HEAD CAKE TRAIL
Monsal-Matlock

Description:

Our walk starts from the coach park in Bakewell, famous for the wonderful Bakewell Tarts, but these are for later. We cross over the bridge and follow the river before turning to follow the path up onto the Monsal Trail. Continuing along the trail up to Monsal Head viaduct where we can stop at the café at the top where there are some wonderful views to be had. We then follow the footpath down into the valley to rejoin the Monsal Trail. We continue to head for Cressbrook and Litton Mill following the river for a mile or so. It’s then a steep 200mts climb up towards High Dale, levelling off at about 350mts (great views of the valley). From here we walk through Brushfield and down towards Putwell Hill before re-joining the Monsal Trail back at the viaduct. Then from the Monsal Head Hotel we head south west on a path that eventually leads to Pennyunk Lane and into Ashford-in-the-Water where we will stop at The Bulls Head.
