B Walk 06-Oct-2019 Leader: John Elliott
Distance (miles): 8.00   Ascent (feet): 840  Difficulty: Moderate

SUTTON BANK TO AMPLEFORTH
Byland Abbey-Ampleforth

Description:

The B walk also starts at the Visitors Centre at Sutton Bank but then takes a shorter route down past ‘Scotch Corner’ where the views of the countryside below are spectacular. By the side of this descend-ing track we will stop off at a little church where we can have our coffee stop before following the track once again towards Oldstead. Joining the track through Snever Woods, we ascend steadily past the Mount Snever Observatory (although hidden in the trees), an impressive tower which once housed a tele-scope and built in 1837 to celebrate the accession of Queen Victoria. We then descend into Wass for our lunch stop at the Stapylton Arms or the Byland Abbey tea rooms before finishing our walk in Ampleforth.
